The Association of Law and Political Economy (ALPE) invites proposals for its second annual meeting, to be held on June 9-10, 2027, in Boston, MA. Panels, roundtables, and individual paper proposals are welcome. ALPE encourages submissions by academics, organizers, practitioners, policy professionals, and others engaged in work on the relationship between law and political economy.
The conference seeks to advance scholarship and movement work addressing the manner in which law both shapes and reflects hierarchies that order our social world. LPE work embraces the contested boundaries of analytic categories like “law” and “the economy” and frequently centers questions of empire, citizenship, class, racialization, sex/gender, sexuality, the carceral state, and disability.
Proposals may be submitted through the online portal. The deadline for submissions is December 9, 2026. ALPE will announce decisions by March 5, 2027.
The association strongly encourages panel or roundtable proposals, although individual paper submissions will also be considered. To ensure broad participation, ALPE has a strict one-presentation policy: Each attendee can appear only once as a panelist or on a roundtable. However, chairing a panel or roundtable does not count as a “presentation.”
Panel Proposals. Panel proposals should include four paper presenters and one chair. Panels with fewer than four presenters may be supplemented by the Conference Committee with additional panelists selected from the pool of accepted individual paper submissions. Papers should be works in progress. Drafts of all papers will be due two weeks before the conference and shared securely with conference participants.
Panel proposals must include:
(1) a title and 150-word description of the panel
(2) the name of the chair, who will be responsible for facilitating the panel
(3) the names of all paper presenters, who must agree in advance to join the panel
(4) a subject area selected within the portal
(5) a single file upload including the title and 150-word description of the panel; author name and short bio for each paper; 250-word abstract of each paper
Roundtable Proposals. Roundtable proposals should include four or five participants and one chair. Roundtables will feature discussions inviting audience participation to address an LPE-related research, pedagogy, or organizing question, or to share skills helpful for LPE scholars and advocates.
Roundtable proposals must include:
(1) a title and 250-word description of the roundtable discussion
(2) the name of the chair, who will be responsible for facilitating the roundtable and discussion
(3) the names of 4-5 roundtable participants, who must agree in advance to join the roundtable
(4) a subject area selected within the portal
Individual Paper Proposals. Individual paper proposals may be submitted and, if accepted, will be grouped into panels. Papers should be works in progress. Drafts of papers will be due two weeks before the conference and shared securely with conference participants.
Individual paper proposals must include:
(1) the name of the author and the title of the paper
(2) a subject area selected within the portal
(3) a single file upload including the author’s name, the title of the paper, and a 250-word abstract of the paper
Eligibility and Funding. We welcome proposals from practitioners, policy professionals, faculty, postdocs and fellows, JD and PhD students, and independent scholars. The conference registration fee covers conference costs and facilitates participation by scholars in need of funding assistance. You may request financial support in the portal. If your proposal is accepted, we will contact you regarding support options. Reduced registration fees will be available for students, postdocs, and fellows. Participants should plan to attend the conference in person on Wednesday, June 9 and Thursday, June 10, 2027.
