Feb 28, 2025: Technologies of Sovereignty in Indigenous North America Conference, a graduate student conference at Columbia University, February 28th 10am-6:30pm. The conference seeks to explore the meanings, significance, and iterations of sovereignty in North America. ‘Technology’ here speaks to the innovative and creative nature of Indigenous self-determination, as well as sovereignty’s historical work as a tool – a language, practice, and posture of resistance. What did and does Indigenous sovereignty look like under conditions of constraint? Where does the concept of sovereignty sit in Indigenous history; what are its limitations and advantages? Join us as we explore these themes through three panels: Law, Sovereignty, and Resistance (comment by Professor Maggie Blackhawk, NYU) Indigenous Knowledge, Identity, and Education (comment by Professor Abelardo de la Cruz, UNC-Chapel Hill) Migration, Displacement, and the Politics of Land (comment by Professor Jimmy Sweet, Rutgers).
Feb 26, 2025: We Are the Union Book Launch at the People’s Forum. This event will be a discussion about how bottom-up workplace organizing can defeat Trumpism and the billionaires. Eric Blanc’s new book, We Are the Union, shows that recent struggles from Starbucks, to Amazon, to southern auto, have developed a new organizing model — worker-to-worker unionism — which builds scalable power by giving rank-and-filers an unprecedented degree of leadership. As UAW president Shawn Fain puts it, “We Are the Union is an urgently needed blueprint for how we beat the billionaire class. Every worker should read this book.” Speakers include: Alex Press (Jacobin), Eric Blanc (Author), Tyrick Pollard (Amazon Worker Organizer), and Adan Esa (Starbucks Worker Organizer). The event is cosponsored by NYC-DSA, Jacobin, NYC-EWOC, and Debt Collective.
